Quick Start

1. Import the CSV files

Google Sheets:

1. Go to Google Sheets and create a new spreadsheet

2. For each CSV file: File > Import > Upload > select the CSV

3. Choose "Replace current sheet" for the first file, "Insert new sheet" for the rest

4. Rename each sheet tab to match the file name

Excel:

1. Open Excel and go to Data > From Text/CSV

2. Select each CSV file and import

3. Each file becomes a new worksheet

2. Replace the sample data

The CSV files contain realistic sample data for a $77,500/year freelancer doing design, web development, and content work. Replace this with YOUR actual numbers:

  • Pull revenue and expense data from your invoicing tool (FreshBooks, Wave, QuickBooks, etc.)
  • Pull hours from your time tracker (Toggl, Harvest, Clockify)
  • Pull client details from your CRM or project notes

3. Work through the review

Follow the workflow in pages/annual-review-hub.md:

1. Phase 1 — Look Back (1 hour): Fill in the data sheets with your real numbers

2. Phase 2 — Analyze (30 min): Complete templates/year-in-review-worksheet.md

3. Phase 3 — Look Forward (1 hour): Set goals in templates/next-year-goals-template.md and break them into quarterly OKRs

Total time: 2-3 hours. Block a half-day.

4. Set quarterly check-ins

Put these dates in your calendar NOW:

  • End of Q1 (Mar 31): Review Q1 OKRs, check revenue pace
  • End of Q2 (Jun 30): Mid-year review, course correct
  • End of Q3 (Sep 30): Review Q3 OKRs, plan strong Q4 finish
  • End of Q4 (Dec 31): Run your next annual review

Customization

Customization

Adapting the revenue categories

The sample data uses Design, Web Development, Content, and Consulting. Replace these with your actual service categories. Common alternatives:

  • Writers: Blog Posts, Copywriting, Ghostwriting, Editing, Strategy
  • Designers: Brand Identity, UI/UX, Print, Illustration, Motion
  • Developers: Web Apps, Mobile, API/Backend, DevOps, Maintenance
  • Consultants: Strategy, Implementation, Training, Audits, Coaching
  • Marketers: SEO, PPC, Social Media, Email, Content Strategy

Adapting for different revenue levels

The sample data models a $77,500/year freelancer. The templates and frameworks work at any revenue level — just replace the numbers. The metrics glossary includes benchmarks for different income tiers.

Multi-year tracking

Save each year's completed review in a dated folder (e.g., 2025-Annual-Review/). After 2-3 years, you'll have trend lines that are more valuable than any single year's snapshot.
