Change Management Framework
A structured approach to managing the human side of technical and organizational changes. Technical changes fail not because the technology doesn't work, but because the people affected weren't prepared, consulted, or supported through the transition.
When to Use This Framework
| Situation | Use This Framework? |
|---|---|
| Migrating to a new platform or tool | Yes — people lose productivity during transitions |
| Restructuring teams or reporting lines | Yes — uncertainty creates anxiety and disengagement |
| Changing a core process (deploy, review, planning) | Yes — habits are hard to change |
| Launching a new feature (internal tool) | Maybe — depends on how different it is from the current workflow |
| Bug fix or minor update | No — normal release process is sufficient |
| Sunset / retiring a product or service | Yes — users need migration paths and timelines |
The Rule of Thumb
If the change affects how people do their work (not just what the system does), you need change management.
Phase 1: Assess the Change
Before planning communication or training, understand what you're dealing with.
Change Assessment
| Dimension | Assessment |
|---|---|
| What is changing? | _________________________________ |
| Who is affected? (list specific groups) | _________________________________ |
| How many people are affected? | ___ |
| How significantly does their workflow change? | Minor / Moderate / Major |
| Is this change optional or mandatory? | Optional / Mandatory |
| What's the timeline? | _________________________________ |
| Is there a rollback option? | Yes / No / Partial |
Impact Assessment
For each affected group:
| Group | Current Workflow | New Workflow | Impact Level | Resistance Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| _________________________ | _________________________ | _________________________ | Low / Med / High | Low / Med / High |
| _________________________ | _________________________ | _________________________ | Low / Med / High | Low / Med / High |
| _________________________ | _________________________ | _________________________ | Low / Med / High | Low / Med / High |
... and much more in the full download.
